A Bend in the Road: Experiencing God When Your World Caves In |
I read this book while in the hospital for chemoterapy for my leukemia. It was a tremendously inspiring and encouraging word for me at a time when I was experiencing deep depression. I highly recommend the book for anyone who is experiencing a life-threatening disease. The author focuses on how reading and studying the Psalms uplifted him in his own struggle with cancer. He emphasizes that the Psalms of David are filled with both lament over the search for God when He does not immediately answer prayer, and praise to God for His constant blessings, even in the midst of despair. The study of the Psalms is honest in its approach, and offers hope for those who are struggling. The last two chapters are the best of the book, drawing to a powerful conclusion. The reviewer who was disappointed in the book must not have read the last two chapters. Admittedly, the book may not be for everyone. But for those who have reached that point in the journey where there seems to be no hope, this book offers a practical and perceptive way to call upon God in your despair, wait patiently for an answer from God, praise God in every situation, turn to the study of God's Word (the Pslams), and pray in your time of need. This book can change your life. It did mine.

An Oasis in Time of Need |
|
This book was given to me when I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I am already looking forward to my second reading. Dr. Jeremiah beautifully weaves personal stories throughout that illustrate in a real way many of the Psalms he includes and writes about. An excellent gift for those of us whose roads are not always straight. |
